Purification of Waste Graphite from Crucibles Used in Photovoltaic Crystallization by an Alkali-Acid Method

The photovoltaic industry generates large amounts of waste graphite (WG) that contains useful metals can be recycled into high-value products. This study elucidated the impurity elements and their existence states in WG, analyzed verified source main phase SiC, determined SiC content to 4.66%. WG was purified using an alkaline-acid method, whose optimal process parameters were a solid alkali ratio 3, calcination temperature 600 °C, time 120 min, HCl concentration 1 M, acid leaching 40 min. Under these conditions, product with fixed carbon 98.45% obtained. Impurities migrate via three pathways: (1) Most (Al, K, Si) silicates removed by alkaline roasting, while remaining dissolved acid. (2) containing metal such as Fe, Mg, Ca, Zn decomposed NaOH form hydroxides or oxides HCl. (3) Silicon carbide impurities method without decomposition often existed acid-leaching slag.
